Recent rainy weather means limited arrivals at soggy field OSHKOSH Using a pair of binoculars, an air traffic controller spots an approaching Apache airplane on Sunday.
"The Apache a half-mile southwest of Fisk, rock your wings," he
radioed to the pilot. "Oh good rock there
Monitor the tower on 118.5,
and welcome to Oshkosh."
Each
year during AirVenture, pilots are greeted by air traffic controllers
in Fisk, seven miles southwest of the Experimental Aircraft
Association's AirVenture grounds. The group uses line of sight to
organize aircraft, making it easier for controllers in the Oshkosh tower
to safely guide pilots. During
the week of AirVenture, which kicks off today, the Oshkosh air traffic
control tower is deemed the world's busiest. Last year 3,224 aircraft
flew into the Oshkosh on July 27, compared with 2,420 at Chicago O'Hare
and 2,936 in Atlanta that day. This
year, air traffic controllers are experiencing a lot more downtime than
usual, said Wanda Adelman, air traffic manger of EAA. Recent heavy
rains in Oshkosh means aircraft parking is limited, leading to fewer
arrivals. The airport authority has announced that parking and camping
at EAA are closed. Sunday's
hot, dry temperatures helped out the field's conditions, but it will
take a few more days before the fields can handle all the traffic. Source GP |
